Do You Like Spicy Indian Food
Do you like spicy Indian food? Ever wondered how you could make a tasty snack for yourself especially when you want it really spicy? The key to a hot, tasty Indian sandwich is the chutney. Making a good chutney can change your sandwich habits for good.
Ingredients
Method 1 :
- Good sandwich bread
- Tomatoes
- Potatoes
- Cucumber
- Carrot
- Butter or mayonnaise
- Mint
- Cilantro
- Green chilies
- Onion
Method 2 :
- Bread, white or brown
- Butter or oil
- Mint or coriander chutney (leaves, ginger, chillies, salt, lemon or tamarind juice)
- Mashed potatoes
- Red onion, chopped
- Tomato, chopped
- Cucumber, chopped
- Chillies, chopped (as much or as little as you like)
- Salt to season
- Dried mango powder to season
Method 1 Recipe :
- Boil a few potatoes, be careful not to over boil. Drain, and mash.
- Grate a few carrots and cucumbers in any shape you like.
- Slice a few tomatoes. Usually they are sliced in rounds, but they taste the same in any shape.
- Add the spicy Indian chutney. Combine a few leaves of mint, coriander (also known as cilantro) and a few green chilies. The amounts will vary depending upon how many sandwiches you are making. Add a dash of salt and just enough water to grind well and make a thick paste.
- Apply butter to one side of a bread.
- Apply the chutney on another bread.
- Add the vegetables. Tomato slices, carrot and cucumber, then top it up with a layer of the mashed potatoes.
- You can also add a little bit of hot or sweet sauce then cover it with the buttered bread.
- Serve hot.
Method 2 Recipe :
- Take a loaf of bread. White or brown bread is fine.
- Spread a slice of bread with butter or grease it with olive oil.
- Make a mint/coriander chutney. Grind a bunch of mint/coriander leaves, a little ginger, green chillies, salt and a little lemon juice or tamarind juice.
- Spread the chutney on the bread slice.
- Mix together the mashed potatoes, chopped red onions, chillies, chopped tomatoes and cucumber. Season with salt and dried mango powder.
- Spread this mixture on the bread slice. Cover it with another chutney-laden slice.
- Grill it or toast. Serve with ketchup.
- Finished.
Tips :
- Try this spicy sandwich on tasted bread for a new flavor and texture.
- Make sure you save all leftover ingredients except for the sliced tomatoes. Sliced tomatoes don't stay fresh for very long.
- You can apply salted or unsalted butter. If you don't like butter, you could replace it with mayonnaise.
Warnings :
Make sure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients. Don't make it too spicy.

Vada Pav has iconic status in India. It used to be "poor man's food", but these days even the rich and famous can be spotted eating it at numerous roadside food stalls!
Ingredients
- 8-10 potatoes boiled, peeled and mashed
- 2 tsps garlic paste
- 1 tsp ginger paste
- 3 green chillies
- 1/2 tsp tumeric powder
- 1/2 tsp black mustard seeds
- 6-7 curry leaves
- Salt to taste
- 2 cups bengal gram flour
- Vegetable/ canola/ sunflower cooking oil for deep frying
- 6 Pav buns (square buns that look like burger buns but are smaller, so you can substitute)
- 1 cup Tamarind Chutney (recipe below)
- 1 cup Mint-Coriander Chutney (recipe below)
- 1/2 cup Shengdaana Lehsun Chutney (peanut garlic chutney) - recipe below
Preparation
- Mix the gram flour with enough water and salt to taste, to make a thick, smooth paste. Keep aside.
- Mix the ginger and garlic pastes and add the green chillies to them. Grind into a smooth paste in the food processor.
- Mix this paste with the mashed potatoes. Season with salt.
- Heat 2 tbsps of oil in a pan on a medium flame and add the mustard seeds, curry leaves and tumeric powder. Fry till the seeds stop spluttering.
- Add this to the potato and mix well.
- Divide the potato mix into portions slighter smaller than a tennis ball. Smoothen by rolling between slightly greased palms.
- Heat the oil for deep frying on a medium flame.
- When the oil is hot, dip one potato ball at a time into the gram flour batter to coat well and then deep fry till golden. Drain on paper towels.
- Take one Pav bun, slit in half (not completely - leave one edge joined) and put a spoonful each of Tamarind Chutney, Mint-Coriander Chutney and Shengdaana Lehsun Chutney (peanut garlic chutney) each on it. Place a potato ball on the bun and fold over, pressing down gently. Serve while the potato ball is still hot.
